What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy involving gentle, specific pressure applied to points on the body based on the theory that these points correspond to different organs and body systems. The practice aims to promote relaxation, improve well-being, and stimulate the body’s natural healing processes by restoring energy flow and releasing tension. While it’s a form of massage, it differs by using specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques to work on these mapped points.

How does reflexology work?

The gentle pressure is applied to points on the hands, face and feet which are rich in nerve endings and when stimulated, send calming signals to the brain and spinal cord.

This in turn activates the para-sympathetic nervous system shifting the body away from the ‘fight or flight response’ to the ‘rest and digest’ mode.

• Cancer symptoms: people undergoing oncology treatment may use reflexology to aid with symptoms such as fatigue, pain, nausea and improve mood state
• Digestive issues: there is evidence to suggest that reflexology can help with issues such as chronic constipation
• Chronic problems such as fibromyalgia, migraines and arthritis by supporting the body’s natural healing process alongside traditional medical interventions
